Keeping Your Dog Cool

As Summer approaches temperatures across the UK are warming up. Whilst enjoyed by many, for man’s best friend this rise in temperature can cause unwelcome problems. In today’s article, we share our top tips on keeping your dog cool in warmer weather.

Dogs, and many other animals, can overheat a lot faster than humans making hot weather a potential danger for your dog. This is because the only way dogs can regulate heat is through panting and, unlike humans, they don’t have sweat glands on their skin. The best way to protect your pooch from heat exhaustion is to help them stay cool by being extra vigilant and trying a few of our tips.

Provide a cool hangout.

If your dog loves spending time in the garden, make sure they have a shady spot with a cool surface to lounge on and, if possible, indoors place a fan near them that can create a breeze.

Fill the water bowl.

Much like us, dog’s will want to consume more water in hotter weather and it is important to ensure that your dog has a steady supply of water when it’s sizzling out. Adding ice cubes can also help to keep the water cooler and thus more refreshing.

Be vigilant

Whilst you are enjoying the sun, make sure you keep an eye on your dog by regularly checking them – if they have been in the sun for a long time (we recommend keeping a timer on hand) bring them inside to a cooler spot.

Don’t leave your pup in the car.

Avoid leaving your dog in car as the closed environment and glass raises temperatures to deadly leaves. If you are thinking of heading out, it is better to leave your dog at home than risk leaving them in the car.

Get a dog pool or turn on the sprinklers

A fun way for your pup to cool off is by biting at or splashing around in water from the hose or sprinklers. Of course, be mindful that your dog may enjoy it and judge their character accordingly. Likewise a dog pool in a shady spot and encouraging them to wade in can help to keep them cool. We recommend water at room-temperature as not to shock them.

As summer approaches, we wish all an enjoyable time in, hopefully, sunny weather. Remember to keep a close eye on all of your pets, not just dogs, to ensure that they are healthy, happy and comfortable.
